Matriarch is a photo series aimed at illuminating the beauty, knowledge and importance of the elder women in our lives, with all three models being middle aged and fabulous. PatternNation designer Cydney Eva has been inspired and mentored by the matriarchs surrounding her, older women that she looks up to and learns from. Having a very close friendship and bond with both her grandmother, Doreen Sisson and her mother Lindy Sisson (model in Matriarch), this tri-generational bond has allowed her to understand and grow close to these female figures in her life. Most millennial women experience a disconnect from older generations, feeling that they cannot relate and not seeing older women in media makes these important figures in our lives and communities less visible. Matriarch features three models that play a large role in designer Cydney Eva's life. Her mother Lindy Sisson began her creative career as a dancer and choreographer and after moving to BC from Alberta was Artistic and Executive Director of the Vancouver International Children's Festival for 10 years, The ACT Arts Centre in Maple Ridge for 8 years and Interim General Manager for the Port Theatre in Naniamo for four months; family friend Barbara Chirinos originally from New York, in BC has held positions at the Vancouver Folk Festival and Film Festival and now works as Executive Director of the Granville Island Cultural Society; and friend Yanira Galvan, the mother of Louis and Will Galvan who run east Vancouver based artist space Shop Wrong, in many ways she is the life of Shop Wrong and is an inspiration to all of the young artists who work from this space. All three of these women play big roles in the communities that surround them, so for Matriarch with photographer Valerie Lina we wanted to celebrate these women with a professional quality shoot featuring new PatternNation pieces: Jewelry Collaboration with Snowpea the Jellewer,Sophie Spano and one of a kind PatternNation long hoodies and jumpsuit. Working with makeup artist Lennox Campbell and hair stylist Paula Shaw put the final touches on Matriarch. We hope that this shoot makes you reflect on the powerful older women in your life that have inspired, taught and believed in you.
