Meet the No Shoes AMA HOUSE Team

No Shoes AMA HOUSE is a monthly event series championing South African music and building community through dance, music, art and sustainable fashion in Vancouver Canada. This event is produced by Pattern Nation & High Vibrations and features DJs CostaBesta, OWABOWA, and Bizrankin, and Hosts Afro Girl and Cyd Eva .

Cyd Eva

Cyd Eva is a queer poly artist of settle colonial UK descent who was born and raised in Greater Vancouver so-called Canada and has also lived and worked in Cape Town and Durban South Africa since 2017. She is a multi-disciplinary artist and the founder of Pattern Nation artist collective working in the mediums of painting, surface pattern design, textile sculpture, fashion design, event production, dance, and curation. With a love for vibrant colours and patterns her unique aesthetic brings bright and bold energy throughout all the facets of her creative expression.

Bizrankin

20+ years in the game of DJing and production he’s known for blending diverse genres into unique, dynamic mixes. His ability to seamlessly merge styles has made him stand out in the music scene. Bringing that east coast flavor to the west.

Afro Girl

The creator of High Vibrations and a Master of Ceremonies to say the least. Cultivating community in the Amapiano world spreading vibes from Vancouver to New York and all the way out in Europe. Being a freestyle dancer flowing for the past 5 years, some call her a rhythm alchemist.

CostaBesta

Nhlakanipho Shabalala aka Costa, CostaBesta.

A South African artist that specializes in rapping, producing his own music, Dj-ing, photography, Fashion designer to name the least. He raps in 5 languages and captivates his crowd with dance moves and peculiar whistling skills. Coming from the Zulu culture, he fuses/samples his Zulu heritage music with his new sound to make it sound like a certain sound scape. His lyrics are written in such a way that the crowd can't resist listening to.

OWABOWA

is a Vancouver-based DJ who discovered her passion for South African music while living in Cape Town in 2007.  Since then she's immersed herself in South African music and dance, sharing these vibes with Canadian audiences. A dancer herself, OWABOWA knows how to get people moving with her high-energy, playful sets.

Rise and Shine Music Video

In September and October 2023 we had the opportunity to be artists in residence with North Van Rec and Culture. During that time we wrote, recorded, produced and shot the song and music for Rise and Shine. It features all original clothing designs by our team and was shot in the baseball diamond house and surrounding forest that NVRC provided for our use. The music video also features scenes from our music jam event that was part of BC culture days.

The Priesthood creates a platform for emerging South African clothing designers and artists

In the heart of Muizenberg, Cape Town there is a movement of sustainable fashion, art and accessories growing. The clothing brand Blue Priest runs an Afrotek streetwear shop that hosts numerous local designers who experiment with materials, upcycle and create unique one of mankind or small run collections. This supportive community nurtures creativity and gives artisans a place to sell and share their creations. With a mandate to support local designers living in South Africa Blue Priest located at 42 Palmer Road on the corner of Church street has created a collective of creatives called the Priesthood Cpt, who worship the creative process, express themselves through design and textile manipulation.

In this editorial shoot we showcase some of the latest designs by a few of the brands that share their creations at Blue Priest: Pattern Nation, Mighty King, Alion Shit Apparel, Afrodizzyacts and Blue Priest. Pattern Nation is an artist collective, clothing brand and creative platform run by Cyd Eva and Costa Besta between South Africa and Canada that specializes in one of a kind, small run and upcycled ungendered colorful clothing and vibrant, colourful abstract art. Mighty King, a clothing dealer and creative designer who also works at the Blue Priest shop creates unique modular streetwear that features his unique colour blocking style and cargo pockets for days. Alion Shit Apparel is run by artist, DJ and designer Masa who also works at Blue Priest and runs the Priesthood collective page his work features iconic hand painted designs and hand stitching on vintage clothing. Afrodizzyacts features their stunning pattern drop crotch pants. And last but not least Blue Priest the brand that started the collective and shop creates the dopest pants, short, jackets, hats and more in African print fabric made one of kind by founder Cyan or in small runs by local sewers.

If your thinking of traveling to South Africa, this is your call to come check out this amazing country and the mother city of KaapStad Cape Town!! Now you know about this collective of artists in Muizenburg you have a jumping point to connect with artists and creatives while in the city.

VANCITY Style : BLIM X By Tooth and Claw X Pattern Nation

SHOP Collection @ BLIM

In the heart of Vancouver’s China town is Blim, the most unique shop in the city in our opinion. It sells creative and colourful clothing and accessories by local artists, vintage, Japanese imported designs and so much kitschy cuteness! We have been stocking the shop with our one of a kind a small batch clothing for the last 2.5 years and bring our most unique designs to the shop. This shoot in collaboration with the brand By tooth and Claw who also stocks Blim with their tarot card screen printed clothing designs which are produced at Blim in the screen-printing workshop.

We are serious about PLAY, JOY & Self Expression! Fashion & art can be an amazing way to bring fun into your life through experimentation and creativity. Blim is the most playful and joyous clothing store in Vancouver in our opinion and we jump for joy thinking about all the fun clothes we stock with them!

Want to know more about our new robe design? Our one-of-a-kind robes are exclusively sold at BLIM. We make these by working with thrifted, roll end fabric and textiled sourced while travelling, so that’s why each one is so unique. The exciting thing about the design is that sewing them creates zero fabric waste. We use the full width of the fabric to create the two panels and the part that gets cut out for the neck becomes the pockets. The fringes and trims are the new material that we incorporate into the design to give even more flair but otherwise this is the perfect solution for those last bits of fabric that can be worn by people of all ages, sizes and gender expressions. We made a run of 8 of them this summer that sold out and have 4 more one-of-a-kind robes available at blim until supplies last.

Have you seen our limited edition neon windbreakers? These jackets have a cool story because they are a product of our lives between South Africa and Canada. In 2020 while Costa and Cyd were living in Cape Town and going to fashion school at CTCFD we sourced these ends of roll neon active wear fabrics, the shop was selling off the last of the fabric from a folded active wear brand. We then go them sublimation printed with a black line design by Cyd Eva. A few months later we finished our studies and Costa got his Canadian PR so we moved back to Cyd’s home of Coquitlam BC Canada. There we set up a home studio and Cyd pattern drafted and sewed these jackets into various different colour combo’s and sizes. We only have a few left in stock at Blim and once these unique pieces are done they are done.

Rework Revolution

How we dress and what we choose to put on our bodies everyday may seem trivial to some but it can also be a tool for self expression, living your values and having a positive impact on our planet. As the founder and a designer/artist for local slow fashion brand and creative platform Pattern Nation, I am extremely passionate about using clothing as a tool for revolution and change. Our collective consists of three artists Costa Besta (SA), Brianna Klassen (CA) and myself Cyd Eva (CA). All of us design, sew and upcycle one of a kind clothing for our platform. We work with second hand clothing/textiles, deadstock fabrics and transform all of our scrap materials into new products such as interactive art installations: Blobs, patchwork clothing, jewelry and accessories.

“The way many clothes are made is harmful to the planet, using too many natural resources and polluting land and air. And because we buy more clothing than we need, too many waterways, forests, and farmlands become damaged” - Fashion Revolution

Reworking is blowing up the fashion industry, just look at the series Next in Fashion on Netflix which puts a spotlight on upcycle designer Nigel Xavier. There are platforms like Fashion Revolution that was founded in the UK but now exists around the globe, educating about the fashion industry and sustainable fashion alternatives. In 2018 Costa and Cyd had the pleasure of showcasing a collection of our upcycled clothing and our textile sculptures Blobs made from scraps and offcut fabrics with Fashion Revolution in Durban South Africa at KZNSA Gallery. We started upcycling for the love of creating unique clothing but to know that the practice has a positive impact on the planet and it connects us with a community who are all a part of the revolution is so impactful. We have since moved back to Coquitlam Canada where we continue to be blown away by the creative artisans in the area that are repurposing and reworking in exciting and innovative ways.

This is our list of upcycle clothing brands in BC to check out

Each artist has such a unique style making stunning one of a kind and small batch creations and these are only the designers we know of who are upcycling in BC. Everytime you buy local and upcycled you are making a statement with your fashion and making a big impact in an artist's life. When you choose to flip a piece of clothing yourself, hem a ripped seam or patch a hole in a garment you are not only making a choice that is good for our planet but you are also making a fashion statement. The fast fashion industry puts out new clothing everyday, producing way more than we need, polluting and creating waste, treating workers terribly and pushing trends and the need to shop shop shop down our throats. So just like the Fashion Revolution prompts us to, let's ask who made our clothes? Get excited when you have a chance to meet a local designer or snatch that thrift find. Check out what you already have in your wardrobe that you haven’t worn in a while and experiment with upcycling techniques to give it a new life. This editorial shoot showcases our most recent collection of one of a kind designs, we hope it inspires you to bring colour, pattern and sustainable fashion into your wardrobe. Everyday we get to choose what to wear on our bodies, why not have fun with it and use it as a tool for self expression and cultural revolution.

Creating Home/ Ukwakha iKhaya Art & Beats Exhibition

Date: January 20 • 2023
End date: March 9 • 2023

Online: January 27 to March 9, 2023

Paintings and Beats by Cyd Eva, Costa Besta & Brianna Klassen in the Leonore Peyton Salon at Place Des Arts Coquitlam

This exhibition is inspired by my experience leaving home, building a new life in another country and feeling love and connection to nature, land, animals and people in both places. It is about living and loving across the globe and calling two countries home.

As a descendant of European settlers, I was born in so-called Vancouver on the unceded Coast Salish Territories of xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, and I grew up in Coquitlam on kʷikʷəƛ̓əm land. After completing my studies in Visual Arts at Simon Fraser University in 2017, I went to Johannesburg, South Africa to complete a 2-month artist residency at Assemblage Gallery. During my time there, I met my husband, Costa Besta, who is Zulu from Durban eThekwini Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. Over the next 5 years, we lived together and apart in Durban, Vancouver, Cape Town and Coquitlam building our creative partnership. While living together in Cape Town during the pandemic, I started my painting practice again while Costa was creating original music in our shared studio. The inspiration of that time planted the seed for this collection of paintings and beats.

In Zulu, “Ukwakha” means “creating” and “iKhaya” means “home”. Home is not just a place to us, it is the energy and the work one puts into themselves, their relationships with others and the land one lives on. The landscape, animals and nature of South Africa and Canada informed the subject matter for this series, and I combined these natural elements with my colourful graphic pattern illustration style. I collaborated with my long-time friend and fellow artist Brianna Klassen on some of these paintings.

Costa, Brianna and I work together through the creative platform Pattern Nation, our slow fashion brand and artist collective.

The opening night of this exhibition will feature a selection of original beats produced by Costa Besta in South Africa and Canada. A selection of his music is available to listen to on SoundCloud through the QR codes within the exhibition.

Please note: the Leonore Peyton Salon is a multi-purpose space; therefore, viewing times are limited. Please call 604.664.1636 for viewing availability prior to your visit.

Moments with Mojapelo in Muizenburg on The Sassy Show

IMG_7862.jpg

In the stunning South African beach town of Muizenberg just outside Cape Town in the Western Cape magical things tend to happen. It’s colourful beach houses, surfer culture and local creatives all add to the beauty of Muzies. People from across South Africa and around the world come to check out its charm and many get enchanted by its creative vibes and stunning natural location nestled in between mountains and ocean. I know I am in love with this place and this is largely because of an artist collective of fashion designers called the Priesthood run by mother brand Blue Priest Afrotek who has a shop on the groovy Palmer Road. Just a few blocks in from the waterfront Palmer is a road full of creative shops and often hosts street markets with local makers and live music. PatternNation, the brand myself Cyd Eva and my partner Costa Besta run stock this beautiful colourful store with our one of a kind clothing and jewelry. This is how we came to have moments with Vanessa Mojapelo in Muizenberg. Vanessa is a filmmaker, director, stylist, model and thrifter based in Johannesburg who I met in 2017. We have stayed in touch since then and always had hopes of collaborating on a photoshoot and are overjoyed to be sharing this editorial with the Sassy Show. Costa and I had the pleasure of living in Cape Town for just over a year and while we were there in April of 2021 Vanessa came down to the mother city and we brought her to the enchanting Blue Priest Store to pick a selection of PatternNation clothing to style herself with. We then walked down to the beach and discovered many beautiful places to shoot our clothing packed with Vanessa’s dynamic and fiery personality.
